Newfoundland Pea Soup and Dough Boys

A hearty and comforting Newfoundland dish featuring split peas, turkey bacon, and delicious dough boys.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split peas
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 ounces turkey bacon, diced
  • 4 ounces chicken ham, diced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas and add them to a pot with water.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour.
  3. Add onion, carrots, celery, and garlic, cooking until the vegetables are tender.
  4. Stir in the turkey bacon and chicken ham, along with thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Continue to simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. For the dough boys, mix flour, baking powder, and water, then form into balls and drop into the soup during the last 15 minutes of cooking.

  • This soup can be made ahead of time and tastes even better the next day.
